Reflections

This Sunday’s Reflections commemorates the figure of St.Gregory The Great, Bishop of Rome (590- 604) whose feast day is this Sunday the 3rd of September. Gregory is a Doctor of the Church and one of the four great Latin Fathers of the Church (the others being Ambrose, Augustine, and Jerome). He was the first of the popes from a monastic background. He is most famous for sending a mission, often called the Gregorian Mission, under Augustine of Canterbury, to evangelize the pagan Anglo-Saxons of England. The mainstream form of Western plainchant, standardized in the late 9th century was attributed to Pope Gregory I and so took the name of Gregorian chant.

The Hell of The West Triathlon 2023

RCB Sports was at the Kilkee “Hell of the West” Triathlon on Saturday to capture some of the days video highlights in Kilkee. Over 480 participants took part in the event in what was some early morning challenging weather for the swim.
The Kilkee Hell of the West Triathlon is an Olympic Distance Triathlon which is up and running since 1985 – making it one of the longest continuously running triathlons in Ireland and in the World. Organised by the Limerick Triathlon Club this race traditionally falls on the last weekend in June. Hell of the West starts with 1500m in the relatively calm waters of Kilkee’s Horseshoe Bay, followed by a 44km cycle against the winds of West Clare and a 10km hilly run along the rugged coastline of Loop Head.

Reflections

This week’s ‘Reflections’ marks the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul or Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, a liturgical feast in honour of the martyrdom in Rome of the apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul, which is observed on the 29th of June. This is probably one of the oldest feast days celebrated in the Christian calendar. Together, the two saints are the founders of the See of Rome, through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom there. The day is a solemnity or a feast day of the highest rank

Reflections – St. John the Baptist.

This Sunday’s “Reflections” is dedicated to St. John The Baptist, the Forerunner, whose Nativity or Birth is celebrated on Saturday the 24th. This is a high ranking liturgical feast observed by most Christian churches. The Gospel of Luke tells of how John’s birth was foretold by the Angel Gabriel to Zachariah the priest, whose wife Elizabeth, cousin of Mary, was deemed too old to bear children, and was born 6 months before Jesus. This feast day closely coincides with the Summer Solstice or Midsummer, and is celebrated in many countries on the night before as St John’s Eve.
