Seán Shannon R.I.P

Statement by President Higgins on the death of Seán Shannon

“May I join with all those who have expressed their shock at the death of the hugely talented pianist Seán Shannon while travelling in Slovenia.

While still only 18, Seán had already exhibited a fantastic musical ability, having commenced his learning of the piano as a self-taught pianist. Indeed, I remember meeting Seán in September 2018 when he performed at an event which I attended at Glór Theatre to mark the 50th anniversary of ClareCare. At the time, Seán was a second year student in Ennis Community College and was already distinguishing himself with his abilities, which he was sharing with a public that recognised the unique and extraordinary talent that he possessed.

I extend my deepest sympathies to Seán’s parents, Cecilia and Frank, to his siblings, and to all his friends and fellow performers.

The Genealogy Show – Ogham stones: Pillars of the Past – Dr Riona Doolan

Lorna is a Professional Genealogist and Family Historian. She is a longstanding member of the Association of Professional Genealogist. Lorna is the Resident Genealogist for Dromoland Castle in County Clare. Lorna worked as Project Genealogist for George Boole *200 genealogy project for University College Cork and is an excellent researcher for Irish family histories.

Lorna produces and presents the successful show: ‘The Genealogy Radio show’ aired each Thursday at 4p.m. from beautiful Kilkee, Co. Clare at Raidio Corcabaiscinn and Podcasts are available weekly.

Lorna has delivered conference papers at Oxford; Lincoln College: Exploration of the Medieval Gaelic Diet: (2012); seminar papers at the Moore Institute in NUI Galway, ‘The Gaelic Lordships in Thomond, c. 1400-c.1500’ and papers at Irish Conference of Medievalists on themes of Brian Boru and landscape of East Clare. Lorna has published on medieval themes and on maritime subjects. Her research areas are the MacNamaras and O’Briens of Thomond.

Lorna received her Certificate for the Advancement of Forensic Genealogy (CAFG) in Dallas in March 2015.

Adrian chats with Gary Kiely of West Clare Cycling Club and owner of Landscape and Leisure in Kilrush. Gary tells me all about the upcoming Clare County Cycling Championships held in Creegh and hosted by WCCC this August 24th and also the West Clare Challenge Cycling Sportive run by West Clare Cycling Club and takes place on the Saturday the 9th of September in which some proceeds will go to develop youth cycling in West Clare and the rest to Charity. Gary tells me all about the plans to develop youth cycling in West Clare. Adrian brings you there RCB Sports news with news and results in GAA, Rugby and cycling.
